THE OFFICIALS:  HOCKEY REFEREES AND HOCKEY LINESMAN

Hockey referees and linesmen are hockey officials.  Although we may not always agree with their call they are vital to the game of hockey.  Without hockey referees and linesman the game of hockey would be complete mayhem.

The hockey referee wears orange arm bands and drops the puck at center ice at the start of the game only.  Their role is to oversee the whole game of hockey.  Their decisions are final.

The hockey linesmen assist the hockey referee by watching for offsides and two line passing.  They do all the face-offs after the initial face off.  Hockey linesmen can call penalties and assist in breaking up hockey fights.

Hockey referees and linesman skate approximately seven (7) miles a game.  Not only do they have to watch the paly they must keep up to it as well.  Flying pucks, swinging sticks and hard skating players are items these officials must watch for.

The hockey referees and linesman put up with verbal and sometimes physical abuse from players, coaches, parents and fans.  Hockey is a fast paced game and these men and women in the black and white striped uniforms must adjust to the quickness of the game.
