HOCKEY PLAYERS:  JUST WHAT IS THEIR ROLE ON THE ICE?

Hockey players all have a role to play regardless of their position.  You can be a leader or a grinder but in order to play well all hockey players must understand their role and how it can benefit a team.

Center hockey players are often team leaders.  These types of hockey players must work both ends of the ice whether in the offensive or defensive zones.  Centers, as a group of hockey players, are good at passing and checking.  Hockey players who can skate fast, who can shoot well and consistently wins face offs make good centers.  Center hockey players need to read the play well and assess the situation quickly in order to set their line mates up to score and take a leadership role on their line.

Wingers are hockey players that support the centers in both the offensive and defensive zones.  Typically right hand shooters play right wing and left handed shooters are left wingers but if these hockey players are put on the opposite side a quick release shot of the puck can increase scoring chances. Hockey players that are wingers have different roles on the ice.  Some are grinders playing the body well along the boards.  Another type of winger is the checker their job is to keep the other team's top scorers under control.  The hockey players, we call wingers, have an uncanning ability to see thru all the traffic in front of the hockey net to score.

Defensive hockey players need to be physically dominating in front of their own net, along the boards and in the corners.  In order to keep the other team from scoring defensive hockey players must block shots and clear the other team's hockey players from in front of their own net.  After clearing the puck away defensemen must rush up the ice in order to make a pass and support the center and wingers in the offensive zone by playing along the blue line to keep the puck in the opponents' end of the ice.  This helps create scoring chances.

Goalies are hockey players that t must know where the puck is at all times.  They are the last defender of their team's hockey net.  They are truly athletic because goalies must react quickly instinctively with a tremendous amount of protective hockey equipment on.  Their ability to concentrate with all the hockey players driving towards the hockey net.  These hockey players are great stick handlers with reactive agility.
