HISTORY OF ICE HOCKEY LEARN WHERE ICE HOCKEY ORGINATED AND HOW IT HAS BECOME THE GAME IT IS TODAY

The history of ice hockey is very interesting. Although know one knows when it originated or who actually invented hockey its origins can be traced back to Northern Europe.

Let's begin to look at the history of hockey. The work hockey itself derives from the French word hoquet which translate to shepherd hook or bent stick

It is believed hockey history began on the frozen lakes and ponds across Northern Europe more than 500 years ago. The Europeans would play a winter version of the popular field hockey game on the icy surface.

Many European countries played their own version of hockey. In the seventeenth century Holland played a version of hockey called Kolven. The English called it Bandy. They used wooden sticks made from local willow trees which would be used to chase a wooden ball called a kit or cat.

In Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada the history of hockey hit a monumental time when in 1875 British soldiers stationed in this town played the first North America hockey game.

The game of hockey continued to grow in popularity when in 1885 four teams joined together in Kingston, Ontario, Canada to create North America's first hockey league. Almost 20 years later in 1904 the first professional league operated out of Michigan and was called the International Pro Hockey League. In 1910 the National Hockey Association was formed and in 1914 another professional league formed, the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA), together these two teams battled each other for the Stanley Cup.

Hockey History took a terrible blow with the beginning of World War One. Many players left the leagues to join the war efforts in Europe. The NHA league collapsed and by the end of the war the National Hockey League (NHL) was formed and soon dominated the professional leagues.
